Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss is a proactive therapeutic option for both male and female patients experiencing hair loss. PRP is an exciting non-surgical therapeutic option for patients requiring hair growth stimulation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
PRP contains special cells called platelets, which can theoretically cause hair follicles to grow by stimulating stem cells and other cells in the hair follicle's microenvironment. Platelet cells promote healing, accelerate the rate and extent of tissue healing and regeneration, respond to injury, and form new cell growth. The primary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate dormant or newly implanted hair follicles into an active growth phase. These granules within the PRP contain coagulation and growth factors that are eventually released during the healing and repair process.
HOW IT IS PERFORMED?
In our office, blood is drawn as if you were having a routine blood test. The blood is spun in a centrifuge and the PRP is separated and extracted from the rest of the blood. An anesthetic block is administered to the nerves of the scalp so that the patient does not feel any pain. Highly concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is injected into the scalp. The patient's hair is washed and the patient can drive to her house without any help. Some patients chose to perform PRP every three (3) to four (4) months, as initial data suggests regular or semi-annual PRP treatments can stimulate hair growth.
DO I APPLY?
The decision to use PRP is a personal one and should be made after careful research, consideration, and consultation with a physician. PRP is safe and natural because the procedure concentrates the good cells from your scalp and injects them directly into the area where it is needed. There is absolutely no chance of getting an infection from another human's blood. PRP involves the use of your own cells that are not modified or changed, and will not be rejected by your immune system.
CAN IT BE COMBINED WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?
Absolutely. In fact, we encourage and prescribe PRP therapy as an adjunct to a non-surgical approach for those patients who are not eligible for surgery or wish to delay hair restoration surgery. As a non-surgical treatment option, we recommend PRP treatment in conjunction with minoxidil and DHT blockers or for those patients who cannot tolerate or have side effects with these medications.
ARE THERE CONTRAINDICATIONS?
Patients with a history of smoking, drug and alcohol use. Medical diagnosis such as platelet dysfunction syndromes, thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenemia, hemodynamic instability, sepsis, acute and chronic infections, chronic liver disease, anticoagulant therapy, chronic skin diseases or cancer, metabolic and systemic disorders.
